December Daily 2014: Day 6

I still believe in Santa

These pages took me a ridiculous amount of time to put together. I was trying hard to strike a balance between telling the one story of the day (visiting Santa) versus telling the story of the whole day. I tend to use photos to support my story, but the images I took really didn't come close to telling the story. I really only took photos for about a quarter of our day's adventure.

But, because we are in a new city this Christmas, I know that some of the things we did yesterday may seem novel right now, but someday they will become traditions, or so common place we won't believe there was a time we found it exciting.

So, after trying many different combinations, I wound up making two simple spreads. One, with two 6x8 photos + journaling. And another with my favorite image of my daughter with Santa enlarged to 6x8 + a purely decorative page to complete the spread.

This album is a little weird for me in that I am experimenting with more embellishment than I usually use in my photo books. I am story-driven. I tend to stick mostly to photos + words in telling our story. It's weird for me to create an entire layout like the one above just because it's pretty. I admire it when others do it, but it's just not what I normally do.

I think working with the pocket-style layouts has a lot to do with it. I tend to work with full-bleed images and my decision to try to work with a lot of white space is definitely changing the whole feel of the album for me. It's not good or bad, it's just different for me. A stretch outside of my comfort zone.
